To fine income-tax returns, just 3 more days left in between. If you are interested to do it without any botheration then with no doubt you should go for e-filing. It is the easiest way if you pay little attention to a few simple points.
Go to this website – incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and download the relevant returns form (ITR 1 to 7) based on your sources of income.
The website explains which form you need to download based on your income source. For example, if you are only income sources are salary/pension, interest income and income/loss from one house property then you can use ITR 1.
Now, after selecting the excel version of the form don’t forget to enable Macros in the form which is very important. Many people might not notice this and forget to ‘Enable Macros’ as it is not clear on website/form. There is a help file which gets downloaded along with the form where it is explained how to enable macros and other required functions.
Just go through the form and fill all the mandatory details required in the form. Make sure that you have filled up your PAN details correctly. Here, you don’t need to know anything about tax rates. Just press the “Calculate Tax” button which tells you how much tax you need to pay and/or how much you need to be refunded.
After calculation, you have any taxes to pay, you can just pay it online using incometaxindia.gov.in website. After paying through the website, make a note of details of the counterfoil of the tax paid challan which has to be entered in Excel form.
If you have any doubt whether you have filled up the form correctly, press “Validate” button. Pressing the Validate button on top of the each form tells you whether have you filled up the form correctly or not. After validating, press on the “Generate XML” button on the top right of the form and an XML version of the form gets created on your computer.
Now, go once again to the e-filing website, and choose the assessment year for which you are filing (it will be AY11-12, if you are filing for financial year 2010-11). You’ll be asked to register yourself which is very simple process. After registering, you use your login and password to login again and you’ll be asked to upload the XML file.
Once you upload and send the file, you’ll have access to an ITR-V form, which is the acknowledgement form. Now, make sure that you are taking a printout of this from laser printer so that the barcode on it is printed properly. Sign it and send it to the Centralized Processing Center by ordinary post within 120 days.
The most advantage of e-filing is that when you file online, tax refunds will also happen much faster within a period of three months. For refunds, you make sure properly that you fill up your address, email ID and bank account details accurately.
Data shows that more than 4.28 lakh refunds for assessment years 2009-10 and 2010-11 have not happened because of wrong addresses or bank account details.
