If the official estimates are correct, then the Kerala Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple would be the richest temple in the world keeping behind Balaji Temple, Tirupati – Andhra Pradesh, The Golden Temple, Amristar – Punjab and The Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, Tamil Nadu.
Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple was a private temple owned by the Travancore Maharaja family. The treasures recently found from the chambers of Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple is roughly estimated to a worth of US$ 11 million which is currently tipped to be the world’s richest.
Recently, an apex court had ordered the check in the temple after a local lawyer filed a suit of mismanagement against the temple’s administration. Following a Supreme Court of India’s order, authorities in Kerala initiated the inventory kept inside the temple’s six vaults.
Being a private temple maintained by the Travancore Maharaja family, no one can claim the treasures that were dedicated to the deity Sri Padmanabhaswamy.
The foundation of the temple is believed to be laid in 1566.
