Surrogate Mother options are getting common recently. Debates and views were there once considering surrogacy in immoral and other negative views. A deeper understating about surrogacy will give a better idea and knowledge in making a decision further if it is needed.
Who is a Surrogate Mother?
In case if a woman who cannot give birth to a child or could not conceive for various reasons can have child through another woman (surrogate mother) who will carry her egg and sperm in her uterus and deliver the baby for her.
With the above explanation one can have a few or more technical and social questions related to surrogacy.
There are two types of surrogacy – one is traditional surrogacy and the modern one is gestational surrogacy. In the traditional method of surrogacy a mother (surrogate) is impregnated through artificial insemination carrying only the sperm of the intended father and she gets pregnant. After giving birth the mother (surrogate) will sign over her legal rights to the child (no common legality in all countries). The intended mother will adopt the baby after the period of step-parent adoption for a period of time. Here the surrogate mother shares her DNA with the child and she becomes her biological mother too having carried the sperm of the intended father.
Gestational surrogacy is very common now-a-days as it is different from traditional surrogacy. In this method the DNA is blocked through the placenta and the surrogate mother does not share her DNA. In this method the surrogate mother is impregnated through In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF Surrogacy) with an embryo created from the sperm of the intended father and eggs of the intended mother. This completed embryo is later located into the womb of the surrogate mother. She will gestate it and after giving birth she will give the child back to the parents.
The gestational surrogacy is the most preferred method of surrogacy as the child is completely of their own and the mother who has surrogated is biologically not connected to the baby.
Surrogate mother should be very strong not just physically but more through psychological points of view. Nourishing a baby for almost 10 months period of time in her womb and gifting it to the parents doesn’t seem to be very easy emotionally. Though there are surrogate agency that operates common now-a-days, a surrogate pregnancy is not just renting the uterus but it is more than that she embellishes the empty home through her service. As cost is a factor, India is being targeted for surrogacy. A beautiful act though it is one must be very careful before opting out this choice of surrogacy as it is completely dealt with another woman’s motherly feelings.
